Living Across from Ground Zero

Living Across from Ground Zero:  Neighborhood Redevelopment, Class, and Space in Lower Manhattan

When the World Trade Center towers collapsed, dust and debris came crashing into the homes of Battery Park City residents. In the years that followed, residents worked tirelessly to rebuild their community. But as they did so, many endorsed a vision of the neighborhood that was secluded, elite, and closed off. Gregory Smithsimon, author of September 12: Community and Neighborhood Recovery at Ground Zero, will discuss the hidden conflicts that have occurred around the World Trade Center site. There, residents’ actions have demonstrated how wealth and class shape community activism, community values, and the very design of neighborhoods. The intersection of class, community building, and geographical space proves to be a promising area for students and researchers studying community development.
